Summary

The chimneys of industry rise over Adua and the world seethes with new opportunities。 But old scores run deep as ever。

On the blood-soaked borders of Angland, Leo dan Brock struggles to win fame on the battlefield, and defeat the marauding armies of Stour Nightfall。 He hopes for help from the crown。 But King Jezal's son, the feckless Prince Orso, is a man who specializes in disappointments。

Savine dan Glokta - socialite, investor, and daughter of the most feared man in the Union - plans to claw her way to the top of the slag-heap of society by any means necessary。 But the slums boil over with a rage that all the money in the world cannot control。

The age of the machine dawns, but the age of magic refuses to die。 With the help of the mad hillwoman Isern-i-Phail, Rikke struggles to control the blessing, or the curse, of the Long Eye。 Glimpsing the future is one thing, but with the guiding hand of the First of the Magi still pulling the strings, changing it will be quite another。。。

An accumulation and improvement over everything Abercrombie has written to this point。 A top to bottom excellent book。 My man leveled up with this one

Reading on audiobook I found some portions of the book to be fairly difficult to follow, due to the authors tendency to switch perspectives without much warning。 During some of the more hectic portions of the novel this was particularly a problem, as Joe Abercrombie seemed to use the switching perspectives to intentionally confuse the reader, so they would feel as lost as the characters depicted。 That all being said, the story was still great, even though there were some issues with my chosen fo Reading on audiobook I found some portions of the book to be fairly difficult to follow, due to the authors tendency to switch perspectives without much warning。 During some of the more hectic portions of the novel this was particularly a problem, as Joe Abercrombie seemed to use the switching perspectives to intentionally confuse the reader, so they would feel as lost as the characters depicted。 That all being said, the story was still great, even though there were some issues with my chosen format。 。。。more

UnrealJoe Abercrombie is putting on a masterclass here。 I recommend this book to anyone who likes good things。 And also to those who don’t。 Everyone should read this。

I’ve read a lot of books。 Many books by the so-called “greats”。 I’ve never been as entertained whilst reading as I am when I’m reading Abercrombie’s work。 Bravo sir, bravo。 You replace many Kings in my eyes 👀

Damn, how I’ve missed Joe Abercrombie’s writing 👍

The book starts a bit slow, but, as usual, Abercrombie's characters and dark plotting are massively enjoyable。 The book starts a bit slow, but, as usual, Abercrombie's characters and dark plotting are massively enjoyable。 。。。more

magnificent from start to finish。

Exciting to start another trilogy in this world, even if this one isn't as sharp and action packed as some of the previous ones。 The veteran characters are still around to stir shit up, and the new cast has an extensive introduction to hopefully get properly unleashed in the next book。 Exciting to start another trilogy in this world, even if this one isn't as sharp and action packed as some of the previous ones。 The veteran characters are still around to stir shit up, and the new cast has an extensive introduction to hopefully get properly unleashed in the next book。 。。。more

I'm a big fan of the previous The First Law books and with The Wisdom of Crowds releasing next month, I finally stopped procrastinating and dove into the new Age of Madness trilogy here with A Little Hatred。 While this book is billed as the first in a new trilogy, it's truly book #8 in the Abercrombie-verse。 You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not reading those books first (plus, they are largely fantastic)。A Little Hatred picks up 30 years after Last Argument of Kings and, at least to me, a I'm a big fan of the previous The First Law books and with The Wisdom of Crowds releasing next month, I finally stopped procrastinating and dove into the new Age of Madness trilogy here with A Little Hatred。 While this book is billed as the first in a new trilogy, it's truly book #8 in the Abercrombie-verse。 You'd be doing yourself a disservice by not reading those books first (plus, they are largely fantastic)。A Little Hatred picks up 30 years after Last Argument of Kings and, at least to me, an unknown number of years after the three standalone books。 There is an array of new primary POV characters: Prince Orso, lazy womanizer and heir to the throne; Leo dan Brock, a young warrior ready to make a name for himself; Savine dan Glokta, ruthless entrepeneur and daughter to the most feared man in the Union; Rikke, the Dogman's daughter blessed with the long eye; Clover, a named Northman caught up in the latest war; and Vic, a former prisoner turned inquisitor/spy。 Each character brings their own unique view of the Circle of the World and the industrial age that has come to it。 All in all, this is an excellent reintroduction to the world of The First Law and I'll be reading the next book ASAP。There are numerous parallels to be drawn not only between characters like Orso/Leo (young men impacting the world in ways they both do and don't want to) and Savine/Rikke (daughters of powerful men with winding roads, to say the least) but also between new characters and those we met many books ago。 Some old feuds may have fizzled out but not all of them and plenty of new conflicts have filled the void。 Characters like Glokta and Jezal from the original trilogy continue to make their marks on the world。 Characters from the standalone "trilogy" like Caul Shivers and Black Calder have plenty of impact on the goings on in the north。 This book also has much better characterization of female characters, not only from the new POVs of Savine and Rikke but even secondary/tertiary characters like Queen Terez and Isern-i-Phail。I've sung the praises of Steven Pacey in all seven previous reviews and he narrated this book, so the audio quality is 10/10。 Pacey is, flat out, the best narrator I've ever listened to。 。。。more

Woah, picks up around 1/3 of book and does not let go, a thriller in a violent fantasy world, strewn with great mix of characters。 A good escape reading as any one can expect

Lauren

This book introduced so many new characters but they were easy to get invested in。 Gritty and set in a unique industrial revolution setting。

Joe Abercrombie er tilbage, endnu mere kynisk og grum ved sine hovedpersoner, jeg elsker det。 Selvom jeg måske godt kunne tænke mig at der skete noget godt for en god person, bare en enkelt gang。。。

A nice return back to the land of Bayaz。 This time we hear the story of the next generation, and watch as this medieval world transitions into the age of machinery。 I enjoyed meeting the 4 POV characters, with Savine being the stand out (no surprise there)。 As this is the start of a trilogy, most of this is about setting table stakes, but there is a fair amount of character progression shown in the process。 The little ABBA switch in the last bit was a bit forced to me, but YMMV。

Uh oh I seem to have started the extended universe of Joe Abercrombie's out of order。 Take my review and my comments in context that I have not read the 6 books (and 1 novella) set in the universe before this book。 Abercrombie has been a fantasy author reccomended the third highest amount whenever someone is looking for their first post A Song of Ice and Fire books (after Rober Jordan/Brandon Sanderson/Patrick Rothfuss, depending on the day) and boy oh boy were they right to reccomend him。 A Lit Uh oh I seem to have started the extended universe of Joe Abercrombie's out of order。 Take my review and my comments in context that I have not read the 6 books (and 1 novella) set in the universe before this book。 Abercrombie has been a fantasy author reccomended the third highest amount whenever someone is looking for their first post A Song of Ice and Fire books (after Rober Jordan/Brandon Sanderson/Patrick Rothfuss, depending on the day) and boy oh boy were they right to reccomend him。 A Little Hatred is set in the same universe as Abercrombie's beloved First Law series, and if this book is any indication, they're all good。 Set in a low fantasy, begining of one age and end of another, setting, this book drops the reader into the middle of this rich world that is explained as little as need be in order to be read。 I've often heard the term grimdark。 and "realistic" used as a way to describe Abercrombie's style, and it holds somewhat true here as well。 The lands of the Union are as unsettled as ever, with war in the north and the burgening equvalent to the industrial revolution in the major cities。 As much as this book is about the fighting, it is also about The Social Question。 How would a fantasy world react to the mechanization of the world that they knew?Abercrombie's dragged the reader into caring about the emergence of industrial capitalism in this universe and leaves us with lots of questions and "oh dear" moments about how these characters react to industrialization。 You should read this book if you:- like "low fantasy" settings- like intersting and intriging characters- want a "gritty fantasy" series。 。。。more

I tried jumping to this right after the first trilogy, but it was too soon - I wanted to spend more time with the original characters, and couldn't get into the new ones (yet)。 But returning after giving it some time, I've found ALH even better than the start of the first trilogy (which was also great)。 The characters are more complex, lovable and intertwined - and this first book feels entirely complete and yet masterfully packs characters and plots into a powderkeg that excites me for the next I tried jumping to this right after the first trilogy, but it was too soon - I wanted to spend more time with the original characters, and couldn't get into the new ones (yet)。 But returning after giving it some time, I've found ALH even better than the start of the first trilogy (which was also great)。 The characters are more complex, lovable and intertwined - and this first book feels entirely complete and yet masterfully packs characters and plots into a powderkeg that excites me for the next book。 These books are must-reads。 。。。more

It's difficult to know what to say about this book。 It shows Ambercrombie's typical flair for characters and grey morality that make his works such compelling reading but the truth is there's little beyond that to recommend it: the plot is not uninteresting but it also isn't ground-breaking; there are no grand twists or jaw-dropping turns。 In fact, it has the kind of predictable, grim momentum that the modern world seems to peddle - and perhaps that's the point。This is not to say that I wouldn't It's difficult to know what to say about this book。 It shows Ambercrombie's typical flair for characters and grey morality that make his works such compelling reading but the truth is there's little beyond that to recommend it: the plot is not uninteresting but it also isn't ground-breaking; there are no grand twists or jaw-dropping turns。 In fact, it has the kind of predictable, grim momentum that the modern world seems to peddle - and perhaps that's the point。This is not to say that I wouldn't recommend the book: as mentioned its characters make for compelling fictional companions and if the problems of its world are painfully familiar there is at least a colourful cast to help us through it。 It has the feeling of setting up a grand game rather than beginning it and I'm certainly interested enough to find out how that takes shape。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I really enjoy the world and culture of these books but this one seemed kind of small in comparison with the last books and I know it’s just the first in the trilogy but I only was motivated to keep reading during the circle duel and at the very end when Bayas showed up again。 the entire Savine storyline seemed to not have any affect except she has PTSD but still acts the same, and she now has a body guard。 I like Vic’s character the most and Rikke and Clover are somewhat interesting but I just I really enjoy the world and culture of these books but this one seemed kind of small in comparison with the last books and I know it’s just the first in the trilogy but I only was motivated to keep reading during the circle duel and at the very end when Bayas showed up again。 the entire Savine storyline seemed to not have any affect except she has PTSD but still acts the same, and she now has a body guard。 I like Vic’s character the most and Rikke and Clover are somewhat interesting but I just didn’t feel motivated to keep reading it’s well written and the characters are well realized but idk what it was I just didn’t care for most of the characters。 。。。more

Goddamn it, I’ve been trying to get through this book for 2 fucking years and it’s just not my cup of tea。 For fuck’s sake I bought the audiobook and I dreaded listening to it so much I was afraid I’d cause an accident。 I hate these characters, the plot fucking sucks when there is one, the world is like a stupid YA book that tries too hard and takes itself too seriously。 Like, Leo’s a bitch, Ardee won’t shut the fuck up, the Dogman’s kid is cute but if I can’t remember her name she can’t be that Goddamn it, I’ve been trying to get through this book for 2 fucking years and it’s just not my cup of tea。 For fuck’s sake I bought the audiobook and I dreaded listening to it so much I was afraid I’d cause an accident。 I hate these characters, the plot fucking sucks when there is one, the world is like a stupid YA book that tries too hard and takes itself too seriously。 Like, Leo’s a bitch, Ardee won’t shut the fuck up, the Dogman’s kid is cute but if I can’t remember her name she can’t be that great, all the irrelevant narrators that somehow are still narrating despite all sounding the same, the only one slightly interesting is Sister-Fucker Orso。 You have a problem when the incest dude is the only character I give a shit about。 I ran Diamond EX in Final Fantasy XIV 230 something times and I still found that more gory and interesting than whatever the hell happened here。 Jesus Christ skewered on a platter with his tongue hanging out of his eyeball sockets I just wanted a gore fest with good characters and this has nothing。 。。。more

I liked this book, it reads a little like a satire or gentle piss-take of a lot of fantasy books。 It’s nice to have a book that doesn’t take itself too seriously, but doesn’t feel like it’s turning everything into a joke。 I read a lot of reviews that say it’s “woke” and “politically correct”, I think they took it far too seriously。 Maybe being acquainted with northern British humour helps。
